When to Wear White – No Rules

Ever wonder, when exactly can I wear white again?  The answer – always when you are talking about white denim!

White shoes or white linen – a little different, save those items for the summer or the old rule “after Memorial day/before Labor day”.  White denim is always great!  Now, that being said, you may not want to sport an entire body of white in the messy weather months, but white goes with every color and texture.  Black and white are a standard all year – every season.  A neutral palette of white with creams or tans is so now and so classy.  White with a bright color or bright print is very popular.  Don’t you love red, white and blue?  The nautical look is always classy in New England!

I love dressing up white! Whether I’m decorating it with layers of jewels or pulling it together with a coordinating jacket, it makes me feel fashion savvy.  Clothes and accessories are emotional, right?!  Afraid to wear white because of stains?…are you a mommy with sweet, yet ready to stain little fingers reaching up to you?!  I never leave without my Tide to Go pen. It’s amazing!  (I was so excited to score a free one at our Getting Gorgeous event in April!) My little ones are past this stage, yet somehow I manage to find stains and I love this little Tide stick.  Afraid to wear it because hips/legs could appear even larger that they are?? Draw the eye up! Pull it together with a pattern on top that looks fabulous with the white, yet draws all the attention up- like this black and white top or a fun flirty floral!

So wear your white, ladies – It’s the new black!

What have you paired your white denim with? Do you ever create a suit like our celebrities in the photo did? Can you do it? Can you wear white before Memorial day?!

Makeup makes me more Trustworthy?

While doing my daily mindless 10 minutes of internet surfing, I came across an article about women who wear makeup appearing more trustworthy… say what? It seems a little absurd to me, but researches at Procter and Gamble, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston University and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute found women who apply and little something to their face daily not only look more attractive (duh, who doesn’t look better with a little mascara and gloss?) but people also think these dolled up women appear more trustworthy and competent. For me, I wear makeup daily because it makes me feel better about myself and let’s not forget I am also single in the city and you never know when I might bump into Mr. Right. But I’d hate to think my competence level was being decided on a day I got a little crazy  wearing a bright blue eyeshadow or some sort of glitter. I would hope someone would at least engage me in polite conversation before judging a book by its cover! However, this study begs to defer. Researches asked study participants to look at various pictures of women with all different looks for 250 milliseconds and rate them. The ratings went up depending on the amount of makeup. Wow!! This doesn’t mean I’m going to change my makeup habits, but  it is food for thought.
Now the question to you is… do you judge a book by its cover?

Feather Hair Extensions

Farrah Fawcett

Farrah Fawcett

My daughter begged me to get feathers for her hair for the start of seventh grade.  I understood because I had feathers in my hair when I started seventh grade as well.    Back then we had Farrah Fawcett to thank for that trend, and I remember wanting hair that feathered all the time like my classmate, Heidi Smith’s.  She was popular, and had naturally straight hair that was well cut to frame her face in cascading layers.   I had naturally curly hair that I needed to blow dry into what turned out more crashing waves than cascading feathers.  In any case, I went to the Haircuttery and told the hairdresser that for my $8.00 cut I wanted permanently feathered hair.  I walked out with a mullet.  It took forever to grow it out, and needless to say did not catapult me into instant popularity as planned.   So when my seventh grader asked me for feathers, I embraced her request with all the enthusiasm of my own youthful hair debacle.  (I have to add here that as an adult and parent I am now acutely aware of the benefits of being nerdy in the long run).  Much to my dismay, my daughter is innately cooler than I ever was.   Thus, I am even more willing to support a harmless whim like getting feathers in her hair, so that when she asks me later for the tattoo or belly ring, I can say no without the reply that I never let her do anything.

Steven Tyler

Steven Tyler

My daughter’s feathers are a bit different than my late 70’s hair feathers.  Thanks to Steven Tyler on American Idol last season, Fly fishermen are finding a shortage in their long feathered fishing lures.  The hair extensions are made from chicken feathers.  The same ones anglers would have paid about $5.00 for in order  to catch some fish.  I paid  $10.00 to have one chicken feather attached to my daughter’s hair . The feathers have been snapped up nationwide by hairdressers to feed the fashion craze that has swept our nation.  Applied like hair extensions to the root of a small cluster of hair they can last up to a couple of months of washing and styling. Either subtly applied to the nape of the neck to peak out from under the hair, or boldly laid as a top layer in natural or neon colors, they are certainly intriguing.  They are also easily removable, making pre-teen hair regrets much less traumatic than back in my day!

Falling in Love with Fall & a Recipe for Pumpkin Donut Holes

It’s fall in most parts of the country right now. Here in Arizona, fall makes me want to get out my, well, t-shirt and shorts. Yes, we pretty much don’t get to start the fall wardrobe wearing till just about Thanksgiving. It is like the opposite of growing up in Ohio. There, when it reaches 50 degrees in the spring, people start getting out their jean shorts and bikini tops. Here, when it gets down to a breezy 65, we break out the long sleeves and jeans (and then suffer miserably through most of the day!). In the meantime, I am trying to get my “fall” on in a variety of other ways. I start to get out the Halloween decorations, I light the pumpkin spice candles, I merit the pros and cons of wasting half my daily calorie consumption on a new “fall” drink at Starbucks. (Seriously, who are these demons of torture? Salted caramel latte, anyone? You had me at hello!) During the rest of my downtime, I peruse the J.Crew catalog and wonder how many days I can actually wear the sweaters in there over the winter and using some homemade mathematic ratio that is completely fair and balanced, I decide yes! I should have that cable-knit in Angora, please. I also drool over these boots in all colors and combinations.

One of the more productive things I have done, though, is to start baking anything and everything that includes pumpkin. Productive for my productivity and for little mouths around me, not for my thighs, exactly. However, recently I came across this recipe for Pumpkin Donut Holes and they are actually pretty healthy. These donuts are not fried and include plenty of real pumpkin. The whole family loved them and they are one of my few non-guilty fall pleasures. Take them to the kids’ fall parties at school, take them to a Halloween get together, take them to book club or the Rotary! (Does anyone go to Rotary anymore? What is Rotary?) Let’s get started; here’s what you need:

Pumpkin Donut Holes

1 Cup all purpose flour

3/4 Cup whole wheat flour

2 tsp baking powder

1/2 tso sakt

1 1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice

1 Cup canned pumpkin

1 1/2 Tbsp olive oil

1/2 cup brown sugar

1 egg

1 tsp vanilla extract

1/2 Cup skim milk (or almond, rice, or soy milk)

Topping:

3 Tblsp butter, melted

1/3 cup white sugar

1 tsp pumpkin pie spice

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray each cup in a mini muffin tin with baking spray. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt and pumpkin pie spice. In a larger bowl, whisk together oil, brown sugar, egg, vanilla, pumpkin and milk until smooth. Add dry ingredients  and mix until just moist. Fill each muffin cup 2/3 full with batter. Bake for 8-10 minutes. Remove and set aside to cool. Transfer to wax paper. Topping: melt butter in one bowl and combine sugar and pumpkin pie spice in another. Brush each donut with butter and roll in sugar mixture to coat. Place back on waxed paper to set and then store in an airtight container. Of note, if you are not serving donuts until the next day, wait till then to do the topping. Enjoy!

Whiter Teeth in Just Two Hours: Before/After Pics!

whiter teethAs I mentioned the other day, I was taking the Crest 2 hour challenge.  Just two hours to whiter teeth with Crest’s 3D White 2 Hour Express Whitestrips!  Confession time: several years ago I tried one of those at-home whitening kits that took TEN days to get whiter teeth and, although I started to see results, by the third day my teeth were too sensitive and I had to stop using the strips.  These strips were different.  I had no sensitivity and with only a 2 hour time commitment required, I was free to go about my busy day without being tied to the house.

The box includes 4 sets of strips.  Used every 3 months, one box should last you a year.  Now, for the big reveal.  Here are my before and after pics:

Alex and Ani Jewelry: A Rhode Island Gem

I recently visited my local Alex and Ani store in Newport, RI.  It is a beautiful store with so many different types of jewelry to choose from.  Alex and Ani also have a store in East Greenwich, RI right up the street from me.  I am lucky to have many of these stores nearby, as the designer happens to be a local Rhode Islander.  This jewelry can be bought nationwide though.  Check out the Alex and Ani site to see where you can find a store, or to order some of this wonderful jewelry on-line!

As I write for different on-line sites, I actually reviewed Alex and Ani and have a GIVEAWAY for a wonderful piece of their jewelry.  Check it out at GalTime to enter the giveaway!

Whiter Teeth in Just 2 Hours?

white teethA few weeks ago I was staying with my BFF, Beth, and I forgot my toothbrush.  She let me borrow her motorized toothbrush.  Now, before I get a collective “Ewww!” from all of you, let me just say Beth and I have been best friends for over 25 years AND she had a spare head for the brush.  Rest easy, my friends.  This was, however,  my first experience with a power toothbrush.  AMAZING!  I felt like I had just been to the dentist.  Seriously, y’all, those things rock.  The next day, THREE people told me how white my teeth looked.  Coincidence? I think not.  The timing was perfect. Blame it on the red wine, the coffee, or age, but my pearly whites have been looking more like dingy yellows.  Now that I am no longer using the toothbrush, my teeth are back to their “normal”, ahem, shade.   So, I was delighted when asked to try out the the new Crest 3D White 2 Hour Express Whitestrips that promises to whiten teeth in just two hours!  It’s perfect for those last minute special occasions when you don’t have a week or two to do a traditional at-home treatment and you don’t want to spend the cash on an in-office treatment.  Here’s my “before” picture:

Please ignore crooked smile

Our friends at the One2One Network and Crest want to know, what life event would I whiten for in just two hours … and what life event would YOU want to whiten for in only a couple hours?

Most of you know that I am a news anchor, by trade.   Let’s be honest, who wants to watch someone on TV with nasty teeth?  Yuck!  I am whitening my teeth for the job interviews I’ve been going on because most stations have you do on-set auditions.  What event would you like to whiten for with Crest 3D White 2 Hour Express Whitestrips in just 2 hours?

I’ll be posting my “after” picture soon, stay tuned…

If you want to whiten your teeth, here are some terrific coupons that will get you $7 off a box!

Hemlines and The Economy

This summer I was sitting on the beach with a group of girlfriends reading a fashion magazine when I blurted out “Well, we’re in for a double dip recession!!”  They looked at me quizzically as I began to explain the correlation between hemlines and the economy.  I tried to maintain my confident tone as I scanned their smart, well-educated (and appropriately skeptical) faces.  I am no economist by any means, and they all know that.  I do read The Economist alongside my Vogue if that counts for anything.  Fine, I admit to not really knowing what I’m talking about, but my source on the theory was good  (my friend who is a fashionista, and whose husband worked for the Harvard Endowment).  So on that particular beach day as I flipped through the pages of models shrouded in full ankle skimming frocks, an economic dread overcame me.   I just thought they should know my prediction.  There is a real economic theory called the Hemline Index that was  developedpencil skirt in the mid- 1920s by the economist George Taylor. He found that  longer skirts correlated with a downturn in the economy, and vice versa.  It has more recently  been tested by researchers and proven to maintain some validity. Since learning about the link, I have noticed skirt lengths rise and fall with the economy. If you think about fashion history in broad strokes the 20’s brought on the mini-dress, the 30’s and the great depression had women in full, long skirts. The 40s & 50s women wore knee or calf length skirts while the country recovered from the war, and then in the booming 60s the mini skirt was all the rage.  I don’t know what the pants in the 70s meant but by the early 80s short skirts were back (thank you Madonna!). Late 80s, early 90s we wore long again.   Late 90s and early 2000, lots of leg was showing, until the more recent economic crisis that brought down more than just hemlines.  Hasn’t your head been spinning with the bipolar hemline swings in the past couple of years as our hope waxes and wanes?! I think our faltering economy is responsible for the ambiguity in our hemline trends, but I would be happy to be wrong.  So just in case, pull in your purse strings and pull down your skirts girls, we may be going for another dip!

Are there any real economists or fashionistas out there who can help our forecast?

Bracelets: How to Wear Fall Fashion’s Biggest Trend!

Bracelets are making big waves this Fall!
It’s not uncommon to see 8, 9 or even 10 on each arm!  Unique to 2011  is mixing all the different types.  This season,  cuffs, skinny bangles, chunky bangles, charm bracelets, beaded bracelets, dainty bracelets,
gold bracelets, silver bracelets and bold bracelets are all on trend …….and together!
Everything Goes

(Lois Hill, Kenneth Lane, John Hardy and Cara Accessories all available at Nordstorm)

Bows are a trend in clothing and shoes this season and check out the bracelets with bows! A classice Juicy Couture Pave bracelet and Ted Baker Cherry Bow bangles are super sweet!

Menswear inspired bracelets are popping up everywhere: (and not just on ladies, men are layering, too!) Leather isn’t just for shoes and handbags. I love these!

(Vince Camuto, Tory Burch, Latasia and Cara Accesories)

Great alone or layered

It’s so fun mixing colorful bangles like these with your current watch and metal bracelets!  This Kate Spade enamel collection and MARC by Marc Jacobs Concrete Jungle bangles

are my favorite for adding some color to your arm!

Pops of Color

I love wearing bracelets with meaning, too.  Right now I’m wearing (only on my right wrist) my “C” and Leo bracelets from Alex and Ani, my Inspirational and stainless cuff bracelets from Latasia, three  metal skinny bangles and charm bracelet I earned for fashion sales with CAbi, my Alex and Ani feather bracelet my friend gave me for my birthday and my “H” bracelet all on one wrist! (Don’t weigh yourself with all these on – it’s not pretty!)  I sound like my dog with her tags – you can hear me coming, but I love it!   What is on the left? A vintage cuff, black leather wrap bracelet and the same Michelle watch I’ve worn for 6 years is on right now.  The large cuffs like the Lois Hill one above always make me feel like Wonder Woman or part of the Wonder Twins – it’s great to not take yourself too seriously!

Wear all at once!

So, share with us, what’s on your wrist?!   What is your favorite new bracelet trend this season?
