When to Wear White – No Rules

Ever wonder, when exactly can I wear white again?  The answer – always when you are talking about white denim!

White shoes or white linen – a little different, save those items for the summer or the old rule “after Memorial day/before Labor day”.  White denim is always great!  Now, that being said, you may not want to sport an entire body of white in the messy weather months, but white goes with every color and texture.  Black and white are a standard all year – every season.  A neutral palette of white with creams or tans is so now and so classy.  White with a bright color or bright print is very popular.  Don’t you love red, white and blue?  The nautical look is always classy in New England!

I love dressing up white! Whether I’m decorating it with layers of jewels or pulling it together with a coordinating jacket, it makes me feel fashion savvy.  Clothes and accessories are emotional, right?!  Afraid to wear white because of stains?…are you a mommy with sweet, yet ready to stain little fingers reaching up to you?!  I never leave without my Tide to Go pen. It’s amazing!  (I was so excited to score a free one at our Getting Gorgeous event in April!) My little ones are past this stage, yet somehow I manage to find stains and I love this little Tide stick.  Afraid to wear it because hips/legs could appear even larger that they are?? Draw the eye up! Pull it together with a pattern on top that looks fabulous with the white, yet draws all the attention up- like this black and white top or a fun flirty floral!

So wear your white, ladies – It’s the new black!

What have you paired your white denim with? Do you ever create a suit like our celebrities in the photo did? Can you do it? Can you wear white before Memorial day?!

Bracelets: How to Wear Fall Fashion’s Biggest Trend!

Bracelets are making big waves this Fall!
It’s not uncommon to see 8, 9 or even 10 on each arm!  Unique to 2011  is mixing all the different types.  This season,  cuffs, skinny bangles, chunky bangles, charm bracelets, beaded bracelets, dainty bracelets,
gold bracelets, silver bracelets and bold bracelets are all on trend …….and together!
Everything Goes

(Lois Hill, Kenneth Lane, John Hardy and Cara Accessories all available at Nordstorm)

Bows are a trend in clothing and shoes this season and check out the bracelets with bows! A classice Juicy Couture Pave bracelet and Ted Baker Cherry Bow bangles are super sweet!

Menswear inspired bracelets are popping up everywhere: (and not just on ladies, men are layering, too!) Leather isn’t just for shoes and handbags. I love these!

(Vince Camuto, Tory Burch, Latasia and Cara Accesories)

Great alone or layered

It’s so fun mixing colorful bangles like these with your current watch and metal bracelets!  This Kate Spade enamel collection and MARC by Marc Jacobs Concrete Jungle bangles

are my favorite for adding some color to your arm!

Pops of Color

I love wearing bracelets with meaning, too.  Right now I’m wearing (only on my right wrist) my “C” and Leo bracelets from Alex and Ani, my Inspirational and stainless cuff bracelets from Latasia, three  metal skinny bangles and charm bracelet I earned for fashion sales with CAbi, my Alex and Ani feather bracelet my friend gave me for my birthday and my “H” bracelet all on one wrist! (Don’t weigh yourself with all these on – it’s not pretty!)  I sound like my dog with her tags – you can hear me coming, but I love it!   What is on the left? A vintage cuff, black leather wrap bracelet and the same Michelle watch I’ve worn for 6 years is on right now.  The large cuffs like the Lois Hill one above always make me feel like Wonder Woman or part of the Wonder Twins – it’s great to not take yourself too seriously!

Wear all at once!

So, share with us, what’s on your wrist?!   What is your favorite new bracelet trend this season?

Walking on the Wedge

Playing on the summer trends of neutral palettes, animal prints and fun texture – shoes can make an outfit!  Shoes are a huge weakness of mine and this season the wedges are stealing my heart!  A 4ish inch heel is an instant confidence booster – provided you can walk without falling!
Remember when you used to play dress up?  The list included lipstick, hair accessories, a glam outfit and heels that were too big? It started in childhood and continues on.  We all feel special in a pair of heels!
This season’s designers have added some fun.  Look at these Marc Jacobs!  Pair these with a Maxi dress or a simple silky white tee and jean shorts, big hoop earrings and a pony tail…you get the picture!  And how sophisticated are the Via Spiga’s!  You can find these in fine department stores, but I stumbled across this exact pair called ‘epic’ in a free standing Via Spiga store in SoHo in NYC last month.  LOVE THEM!  How about the JRenee’s?  These aren’t your mom’s flip flops!  What a brilliant design team for Seychelles – a cool casual tribal wedge and fun flirty floral print wedge!  Who can ever top Tory Burch….she is always one of my top 5 shoe and handbag designers – classic, yet on trend fun stuff!
In case you are more of a classic shoe girl…..here are just a few more I’m loving this summer! One for every budget…come to mama!  Now…..I just need a bigger closet!
Do you dare walk on the wedge?  Who are your favorite shoe designers this summer?

Trending this Spring – The Iris Has It!

Yes, iris in floral prints are H-O-T for Spring 2011, but I’m talking about the color, Iris.  It’s like a deep cobalt blue with a purple hue – remember that jumbo pack of 96 crayons your grandma always gave you for the car trip home (the very long ride without seat belts)? Was it called Iris or Indigo?! – whatever you name it,  it is just pretty! On clothes, everyone can wear it. Next to the face, it really makes every shade of skin tone glow.  Bright ‘pops of color’ are the rage this season!  How fun is a white jean with a bright top? It lifts your spirits!

But don’t take my word for it, here are some familiar faces sporting my “it” color for the season:

So do you think I have a blue issue?! Have you seen this color in magazines or malls lately? Found a favorite item? Share – we would love to hear it!

Top Trends for Spring Nails

I’m loving the fun colors for nail polish this season!  You can never go wrong with a French mani or pedi, but live on the edge of your peep toes or flip flop out over what is making toelines this season! I took a trip to NYC, with my AMomKnowsBest friends, this April for Getting Gorgeous, and I could not help but notice that women are ready to bring their toes out to play!  Some were showing off their first spring pedicure in great open toed shoes…others, like the ladies of AMKB, scored  adorable sandals from Flip Out Sandals and can’t wait to show off their cute tootsies!   I mean, really, how fun are THESE??  flip flops

So…here are the top 3 trends for Spring 2011 in nail color:

1) Blues Baby: How fun are these?! My other favorite is OPI Austin-tatious from their new Spring 11 Texas line!  I always love OPI  names, but this season they are based around Texas towns – Nothing Plano about it

2) Nudes have it: A nude nail always looks clean and fresh on toes or fingers!  It’s very easy to match with dressy or casual and goes with every color!  My favorite part is that you can’t see chipping as easily on a nude nail.

3) Shades of Gray: I loved dark metallic gray this winter and a lighter tone for summer is in style! A gray nail goes well next to the vibrant pops of color in clothing this Spring – can’t go wrong here!

New, different and off the Spring runways this season (and popular especially with the younger generation) is the “moon manicure” , gold foil and OPI’s black shatter that you polish over your current color to crackle or ‘shatter’ it!

What will you try this season? Do you have time to do it yourself or do you like to go to the salon?

One thing is for certain, it’s time to Spring on the Polish!

BONUS: All AMKB readers can get Flip Out Sandals for 20% off by entering code GORG at checkout.  Nice.

The Best Anti-Cancer/Anti-Wrinkle Way to Get a Tan

Could Rhode Island be one of  the first states to ban minors from the tanning beds?

According to a recent study posted on WebMD and The Skin Cancer Foundation: people who use tanning beds have a 74% increased risk for melanoma (skin cancer) compared to people who had never used a tanning bed!  The risk was four times higher among frequent users of high-pressure tanning beds, which emit mostly UVA radiation!

Before I was 20, I went to the tanning bed at least 3 times per week! I was under the blanket belief, it won’t happen to me, but now, as a wife and mom, my priorities have changed. I have had malignant melanoma not once, but twice. The survival rate is only 50% if it spreads into the lymphatic system.  Needless to say, you won’t catch me in a tanning bed.

Here are the ABCDs of Melanoma:

How’s that for a beautiful tan?

You can still get the glow without the radiation or the creepy little eye covers. Here are some of my favorite self-tanning products!
***note, you must exfoliate well and my favorite tip:  put one layer of hand cream on first, let it dry and it will keep your hands from turning orange!
L’Oreal Sublime toilettes,  Bronze One Day Gel and Neutrogena MicroMist self-tanning spray

What is your opinion on banning minors from tanning beds?  Do you have a friend or relative diagnosed with skin cancer?

What to Wear When You’re a Pear!

Many women have a pear shaped body, which means our shoulders are narrower than our hips–me included. The good news is, when it comes to fashion, size is irrelevant (especially if you know how to dress for your body type).  More good news,  trends this Spring are great for Pears!

Celebrity Pears
On the Bottom: Pears look great in a wide leg trouser pant or boot cut jean! Stay away from skinny legs or jeans that taper at the bottom. If your legs are shorter, a cropped pant isn’t your friend either. Pockets on the backside break up the landscape and can be stylish, but stray from tiny pockets or one’s climbing down the thigh. Longer pants visually elongate your leg just like a heel does!

Jeans that make your butt look great

Jeans that make your butt look great

Heels make thighs appear smaller than they are – love it! Opt for ones without high ties around ankles cutting the leg off giving a sausage appearance to the calf. Matching the color to your skin gives the illusion of a longer leg. Bring on the platforms and flatforms!
On Top: Draw the eye up! Wear pops of color, vertical stripes and fun florals on top and pair with a darker pant. Patterns and lighter colors widen the arena, so pears should only wear on top.  Don’t be afraid of longer tunics and jackets.  They also add height.  The goal is balance!
Accessories are a girl’s best friend: Creating the visual ‘V’(wider shoulders than waist) is great, so a V-neck top or button down does this automatically, but if you want to wear a crew neck or square neck, simply add a necklace to create the ‘V’!

**Note** The medallion draws the eye in on a necklace, so if you want to show off your flat tummy wear a long necklace that hits at that spot!  This concept is also true of your handbag!

Proportion is everything! It’s easy to create an hourglass with clothes no matter what fruit you are! As my favorite designer, Carol Anderson says, “be yourself and you will always be in style!”

Confused about which Spring trends look best on YOUR body type?  What are your favorite looks this season?  I’d love to hear from you…leave me a comment below!
